Generic Sampling Instructions

EMSL Analytical Inc. provides expert sampling instruction and training through our comprehensive workshop schedule. EMSL's Training Center is conveniently located at the corporate headquarters in Cinnaminson, NJ. Below are some general guidelines to follow. We highly recommend you seek professional advice if you are ever unsure of the best method to gather your sample. Visit www.emsl.com for more information regarding sampling and workshop schedule.

  • Obtain the correct pump, operating instructions, media holder, inlet device (where used) flow-measuring device, and media for your application.

  • Look up the analytes in the sampling guide. Note the Flow rate and volume ranges for each compound of interest.

  • Select the rate and volume that meet your needs, e.g. lower rates = longer
sampling time to a given volume. Flow rate (lpm) x Time (min) = Volume (L).

  • Compounds with the same compatibility code can be analyzed together, though the flow rates and volumes must be compatible also.

  • Open and insert media into the appropriate holder or sampling device. Sorbent tube arrow points to pump, cassette goes inlet end down in the cassette holder.

  • Start pump and connect flow-measuring device. Adjust the flow rate as desired, write it down, remove the flow-measuring device, and place the pump in the sampling area.

  • Check the flow periodically, and check for signs of overloading. At the conclusion of the sampling period, reconnect the flow-measuring device, and write down the flow.

  • Turn off pump, remove media from holder, and close (cap it). Complete the Chain of Custody and ship to EMSL following sample handling instructions from the method.
